Chubb Fire & Security Limited employed more apprentices last year than in any previous year, expanding its apprenticeship programme to 28 new employees across many new disciplines, ranging from finance and IT to monitoring and project management, as part of an investment in the next generation of fire and security employees. Apprenticeships now span both office- and field-based opportunities, which has proven effective for increasing interest in the apprenticeship programme. Chubb is a part of Carrier, a leading global provider of innovative heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies.
“Expanding into non-engineering apprenticeships has opened up a great deal of scope, and we are hoping to make the most of this with new apprentices into the Community Care business, and to create a progression of recruits for the finance team,” said Jim McSharry, apprentice programme manager.
For more than 20 years Chubb has supported the next generation of fire and security engineers and in that time more than 400 employees have completed apprenticeships, with 64 currently in intermediate, advanced and higher-level programmes.
In just two years, finance apprentices receive an Assistant Accountant qualification upon completion of the programme. Ismail Badat, assistant accountant apprentice, said, “My overall aim is to become a qualified accountant, and I am gaining excellent experience to further this goal. I’m learning more than I ever expected about both the finance profession and fire and security industry.”
Divya Hansora, Chubb’s digital IT consultant apprentice is in her first year of a three-year course, which will result in a level six apprenticeship qualification, categorised as a Batchelor degree. “I knew what I was good at and what I enjoyed, but being an apprentice means that I can put what I learn into practice, so theory becomes real life. My time here has been a real eye-opener in terms of seeing how our fire and security systems are required by every business and my advice to people looking into apprenticeships would be ‘do it and don’t look back’!”
Taylor Murphy is one of Chubb Systems’ technical support technician apprentices. She is in her fourth year of a four-year NVQ Level three apprenticeship programme and on completion has the opportunity to use education programmes to work towards degree level qualification.
“I’m kept very busy, with no two days the same. The people I work with are great and my favourite role so far has been project co-ordination. I hope to go into this with the end goal of being a project manager – it is apprenticeships that give you the hands-on experience to help make these decisions.”
